Vol. 259 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat Classification Scheme.

44.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries how the pilot meat classification scheme will be carried out; and if it will apply to all meat or to meat from certain factories.

Until the further experimental work to which I referred in my reply to the Deputy on 7th March is completed and the results evaluated a final decision on the nature and extent of the pilot scheme will not be taken.

What sort of scheme will the pilot scheme be? Can the Minister give any idea of how it will be operated?

It will follow general lines under headings such as the age, sex, weight, conformation and composition of the animal. The composition will be shown as a percentage of lean meat. Composition and conformation will be determined by measurements of weight and length of the carcases by reference to a ready reckoner based on calculations devised by people on the technical staff. It is an intricate matter.

To whom will the pilot scheme apply? Will it apply to all cattle from all factories?

It will apply to export cattle.

To all export cattle?

I would hope so.
