Vol. 259 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Level Crossing.

8.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when CIE will provide wider gates at the level crossing at Garryduff, Claremorris, County Mayo in view of the serious accidents, one of which was fatal, that have taken place there.

I have been informed by CIE that the board propose to apply shortly for an order under section 22 of the Transport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1971 to enable automatic controls to be installed at Garryduff level crossing.

Under the board's proposals the existing gates will be removed and the carriageway through the crossing will be increased in width to 12 feet.

Can the Minister state when this will be done?

CIE are applying very shortly for an order; they do not say how long it will be before that is done.

Is the Minister aware that the gates must be imported from England or Scotland? Can the Minister state if this is responsible for the delay in the matter?

An order must be made to enable automatic controls to be installed. This order will be made soon and then it is intended that the existing gates will be removed and the carriageway widened.
