Vol. 260 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pigmeat Exports.

67.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what tariff or quota restrictions were operative in recent years against the export of (a) Irish pigmeat and (b) EEC pigmeat to the UK market.

Irish pigmeat has duty-free access to the UK market. Bacon and pork of EEC origin are subject to a tariff of 10 per cent on importation into the UK while other pigmeat products are liable to varying rates of import duty of up to 17 per cent.

Imports of pigmeat into the UK from Ireland and EEC countries are not subject to quantitative restrictions.

In the case of bacon, however, supplies on the UK market from the main supplying countries are regulated in accordance with the bacon market sharing understanding in which Ireland participates. The Netherlands is the only EEC member state which is a party to the understanding and supplies bacon to the UK market.
