Vol. 260 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Enforcement of Speed Limit.

24.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that the general speed limit of 60 mph is being flagrantly disregarded; and what steps he proposes taking to enforce compliance with it.

Enforcement of the general speed limit of 60 mph involves substantial use of Garda manpower and transport which, because of other pressing and important duties, have not been available for some time past to the same extent as previously.

The programme of expansion of the Garda Síochána force which I introduced last year is now making more manpower available. Furthermore, additional radar equipment for the detection of speed limit offences has been acquired and the Garda transport fleet is being increases steadily. As a result, I expect an intensification of enforcement measures in the months ahead.
