Vol. 260 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Bankruptcy Law.

31.

asked the Minister for Justice when he intends in the public interest to revise the law on bankruptcy and fraud; if he is aware of the loopholes in existing legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I announced last week, I have just received from the Bankruptcy Law Committee their very comprehensive report on this difficult subject of bankruptcy law. The report runs to over 1,000 pages of typescript and I take this opportunity to place on the records of this House my appreciation of all the work they have put into their investigation.

I am arranging to have the report printed and I hope to see it published as soon as possible so that interested persons and organisations may comment on it.

Is there any section of the Garda trained or specialised in the detection of offences of fraud in view of the expansion of business in this country and the increase in the number of limited companies being formed? Is there any section of the Garda trained in the specialised work involved?

The supplementary is a bit outside the terms of the original question but, to the best of my knowledge, there is, in fact, a group within the Garda at Dublin Castle who are engaged full time on that type of investigation.

A fraud squad?

Yes, more or less.
