Vol. 260 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Temple Street Dental Clinic.

16.

asked the Minister for Health if the out-patient dental clinic has been closed at Temple Street Children's Hospital; if so, when and why; whether an undertaking was given in November, 1971, by his Department that this clinic would not close down; and if, in view of the large catchment area, he will take steps to reopen the clinic.

I understand that this clinic was suspended around the end of November, 1971, due to lack of space and facilities and the hospital authority are not yet in a position to state when it will be resumed.

Children from the catchment area, formerly served by Temple Street Hospital, are now referred to the out-patient dental clinic at St. James's Hospital where I understand an adequate service is available.

I am asking the Eastern Health Board to consider whether more convenient arrangements could be made in relation to children from the area previously served by the facilities in Temple Street Hospital.

Is the Minister aware that he gave an undertaking here in November, 1971, prior to the closure of the dental clinic at Temple Street Hospital, that it would not close and is he aware of the great inconvenience caused to children on the north side of the city who have to go to St. James's Hospital on the south side to obtain dental treatment? In view of that, will he not provide a special grant for Temple Street Hospital to reopen the clinic and provide the necessary services there as was done to November last?

I have already replied to the Deputy. I have said I am in touch with the Eastern Health Board in regard to the matter.
