Vol. 260 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Payers.

33.

asked the Minister for Finance the total number of persons in the State paying income tax under each of the following codes: (a) PAYE, (b) income tax (annual returns, standard rates), (c) sur-tax and (d) other codes; and the total amount of revenue from all forms of income tax for the past year for each of these categories.

As the reply contains statistical material, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the reply:

The latest information regarding the numbers of taxpayers relates to the year 1970-71. For that year it is estimated that there was a total of 630,000 individuals effectively liable to income tax, of whom about 585,000 paid income tax under Schedule E, and 45,000 paid income tax under Schedules C and D. The estimated number of PAYE taxpayers under Schedule E was 500,000. The estimated number of companies effectively liable to income tax was 7,000.

The total number of sur-tax payers for 1970-71 was 4,735.
