Vol. 260 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pornographic Literature Advertisements.

141.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if his attention has been drawn to a report (details supplied) indicating that advertisements for pornographic literature are coming into this country by post and are being delivered to houses in Dublin; what steps he intends taking to stop the inflow of this material; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A newspaper report dealing with the receipt by post of an advertisement for pornographic literature by one person in Dublin has come under notice. No other similar case has been reported to the Department recently.

Detection of indecent or obscene material sent by post is difficult because such material is usually sent in plain sealed envelopes judging by the samples which have come under notice. Where a letter packet is suspected of containing obscene or indecent material, the practice is to withdraw the packet from the post and send it to the Customs authorities for examination.
