Vol. 260 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recreational Centres Plan.

38.

asked the Minister for Education when details of the prototype plan for recreational centres will be made available to the public.

Plans have been prepared for a sports unit which with co-operation between the local authority and the Department could be provided as part of the larger community school complexes to serve both school and community purposes. The financing and management arrangements involved are at present the subject of discussion with a number of local authorities.

Is it the position that the financing of the proposed recreational facilities in the community schools should be dependent on the development of recreational facilities in existing regional technical colleges and the secondary and vocational schools?

The Deputy will see from the last part of the reply that the financing and management arrangements involved are at present the subject of discussion with a number of local authorities. In regard to the facilities attached to either community schools or regional technical colleges or other schools, every possible consultation is at present being conducted not just in Dublin but around the country. The Department are very anxious to indicate to local authorities each line of significant development and we should like to have co-ordination between the local authorities and the local educational bodies. There is no specific blueprint but I can assure the Deputy that we are endeavouring to cater for full community needs.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say——

Could we have some progress? We have 141 questions and other Deputies would like to have theirs answered.

I want to ask only one question. The Chair will accept that this is a very comprehensive and important question. Would the Parliamentary Secretary write to me in relation to the financing of the proposed facilities throughout the country in relation to the vocational and secondary schools?

The matter has not been fully developed so far and I will keep the Deputy informed.
