Vol. 260 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Playground Leadership Grants.

39.

asked the Minister for Education why a grant was refused by his Department to a person (name supplied) who wished to pursue a course in playground leadership in Britain because no such course is available in Ireland.

There are no funds available to my Department to assist persons wishing to pursue a course in playground leadership in Britain.

May I be allowed to ask one supplementary? In view of the fact that there is no such course here, does the Parliamentary Secretary not think that in the circumstances of this case he might see to it that funds are improved for this course and could he not arrange for discussions with the university concerned or with some college with a view to providing a course here? He appears to appreciate the importance of this——

Will the Deputy ask a question?

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that we could reduce the money for prisons and reformatories if we had this course here?

All these are factors——

Has the Parliamentary Secretary reservations?

No, beyond saying that so far grants were made available only to students who wanted to pursue studies in physical education outside the country. The proposal is there for a National College for Physical Education. The Deputy will appreciate that I am keeping the entire matter under review.

This girl has been accepted by this college and she has not got the money. What would the Parliamentary Secretary advise her to do?

The Deputy will realise that you cannot have instant regulations or instant provisions for isolated cases. Now that this matter has been called to my attention I will consider it.
