Vol. 261 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Potato Smuggling.

59.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of reports that smuggled imports of Cypriot potatoes are having a detrimental effect on demand for home supplies; and if he will make a statement on the effectiveness of present controls on potato smuggling.

I am not aware that the demand for home produced new potatoes is being affected to any significant extent by imports of smuggled potatoes. The Customs authorities are exercising special vigilance to curb the illegal importation of potatoes.

Is the Minister aware of a report in The Irish Press some weeks ago which created the impression that there was considerable disruption of the home market?

Yes. I am advised that the Department are not aware of any substantial imports of such potatoes. They are aware that there have been some or that there may have been some.

Is it not true that we are exporting potato crisps?
