Vol. 261 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Car Assembly Plant.

73.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to a report that a car assembly plant at Santry, County Dublin, will be closed down in June; the number of people who will be made redundant as a result; whether his Department were consulted prior to the decision to close this plant; and what plans his Department have to avert or alleviate the effects of this closure.

There is no question of the closing of the car assembly plant referred to; this plant has been extended within the last 12 months and the company have indicated that it is being further extended this year.

I have, however, seen press reports indicating that the company's retail service division will close from 2nd June in pursuance of the company's policy not to complete with their own dealers; that a number of staff will be transferred to other divisions within the organisation already employing in all over 400 people and that the move will involve about 22 redundancies.
