The Cork County Council were asked by my Department in July, 1971, if they would be prepared to take over the State's interest in the portion of the roadway from the East Gate of Dún Uí Mhurchadha, Ballincollig, to the Department's Caretaker's Quarters, Powder Mills, free of charge, for use as a public road.
This offer was made to the council in view of the proposed sale to them of the State's interest in portion of the State lands attached to the barracks and because a major portion of the lands being sold are separate from the remainder of the sale area and adjoin the roadway in question.
The council replied on 14th April, 1972, stating that, before the county engineer would be prepared to recommend to the council that the road be taken over and maintained as a public road, my Department would be required to contribute the sum of £1,000 to the council for the carrying out of repairs to bring the road up to the standard required by them.
The council's reply is being considered in my Department. I will inform the Deputy of the outcome in due course.
