Vol. 261 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Married Women.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will amend the conditions of employment of female civil servants to permit their continuance in employment after marriage.

The position is as set out in my Financial Statement of 19th April, 1972.

Would the Minister not consider that I might have forgotten the details of that statement, historic though it was?

I think the Deputy is unlikely to have forgotten it. I said that the Government accepted the question of equal pay as a national aim. I also said that the related question of the marriage bar was being dealt with within the public service by way of the removal of the non-statutory items which operated as a marriage bar, and also the statutory ones, and that we hoped to have all of them out of the way within a period of two years as far as I recollect.

Questions Nos. 19 and 20 postponed.
