Vol. 261 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of unemployed for the period 1st May to 31st May, 1972; and whether there has been any significant decrease in the unemployment total over the past three months.

The numbers on the live register for the period specified were:

28th April

75,129

5th May

73,771

12th May

72,364

19th May

71,665

26th May

70,758

Between the 25th February and the 26th May the numbers dropped from 78,194 to 70,758.

Does this represent the normal seasonal change or is it the result of the injection of the £20 million? Is the Parliamentary Secre tary yet in a position to state the increase in employment resulting from that?

That is a separate question.

It is a combination of course—the seasonal change and the Government's progressive policy and the injection of the £20 million.
