Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alcoholism Investigation

23.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of the proposed investigation which his Department intend to conduct into the problems of alcoholism in this country; how long this investigation is expected to take; and if the results will be made public.

As I announced when introducing the Estimates for my Department last March, I have asked the Irish National Council on Alcoholism to consider, in the light of the International Conference on Alcoholism and Addiction held at Dún Laoghaire in September last, what should now be done to deal with the problem of alcoholism in our society. The council is now actively engaged on this task and has sought the views of organisations and individuals interested in the problem. The measures advocated by the council will be examined, and, wherever feasible, implemented with the least possible delay. The question of further investigation of the problem is being considered and details of any such investigation will be announced in due course.
