Vol. 261 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployed Workers Delegation.

26.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will make a statement regarding his recent meeting with a delegation from the Unemployed Workers Association; and if he will indicate what aspects of the current high rate of unemployment in this country were discussed.

A delegation from the Unemployed Workers Association was received on 9th June, 1972, by officers of my Department, who were accompanied by officers of the Department of Industry and Commerce and the Industrial Development Authority.

Among the matters discussed were the current unemployment situation, measures to create employment, redundancies and closures of enterprises, the filling of vacancies through the National Manpower Service and rates of social welfare benefits.

Could I ask the Minister was there dissatisfaction expressed at the method of making positions available through the manpower agency or if any proposals emerged from the meeting?

I cannot give details to the Deputy. This occurred only on Friday last and the results of the meeting, as I have said, are being considered by the Minister. I could not say in advance what emerged.

Was there dissatisfaction expressed about the fact that jobs were not made available through the manpower agency or the employment exchanges?

I could not tell the Deputy offhand. I might be able to if I went through my file.
