A total of 39,610 civil servants were serving on 3rd January, 1972; 57.2 per cent of these were serving in the area covered by Dublin County Borough and the Borough of Dún Laoghaire.
The figure in respect of civil servants serving is taken from the Civil Service Census which relates to the first working day of the calendar year and is provisional.
