Vol. 261 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Prices.

71.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will state the reasons for the reduction in the retail price of a leading brand of Irish butter (details supplied) in Britain; if it is intended to consider a reduction in the retail price in this country also; and, if not, why.

The recent reduction in the prices of Irish and other butter on the British market reflect (a) a decline in consumer demand following the very substantial increases in the price of butter on that market during the past year or so, and (b) an increase in the quantity of butter available on the market. Fluctuations in the price of Irish butter on export markets do not affect the price on the domestic market here, which continues to be subsidised by the Exchequer to the extent of £176 per ton.
