Vol. 261 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Youth Leader Courses.

32.

asked the Minister for Education the courses provided in Dublin for youth leaders; by whom these are provided; and what grants are available from his Department for these courses.

Organised courses in youth leadership are provided in Dublin by the Dublin Institute of Adult Education.

These consist of a basic course for beginners, and another more advanced one for those who complete the first.

Other courses are provided by a number of voluntary youth organisations such as the scouts and girl guides.

Each of these associations receives a grant-in-aid from my Department towards their expenses, including the costs of leadership training.

Are these courses adequate to meet the demands?

Because of the development of the whole youth programme in this area it is becoming fairly obvious that this is merely the beginning.

What plans have the Department to set up their own courses for youth leadership?

The matter is being actively considered and consultations have been taking place with all the organisations concerned for some time.

When will the Parliamentary Secretary be able to give a decision?

I could not say.

Will it be this year?

I hope so.
