Vol. 261 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Estuary Development.

25.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether the Government have any plans to develop the Shannon estuary as a deep-sea port and transhipment centre; and, if not, why.

The question of development of the Shannon estuary as a deep-sea port and transhipment centre was exhaustively examined by an inter-departmental committee in 1961 and the findings of that committee were given in detail in a reply on 19th July, 1961 to a Parliamentary question, columns 1224 to 1233 of the Official Report, on the subject. The Government accepted the finding of the committee that in absence of evidence that commercial interests would be prepared to use such facilities if provided, grants or concessions should not be made available for development. There has been no change in the situation in the meantime which would warrant a review of that decision.
