Vol. 261 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Royal College of Surgeons.

46.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the decision of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland to increase fees for Irish students, he will consider increasing the Government grant-in-aid to this college.

The annual grant-in-aid of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has been raised from £13,000.00 in 1971-72 to £18,000.00 for the financial year 1972-73 in recognition of the college's increased costs generally. The question of student fees is entirely the responsibility of the college authorities.

Was it because the college decided to increase their fees that the grant-in-aid was increased from £13,000 to £18,000?

No. The whole question of the college is under consideration by the college authorities.

I want to ask the Parliamentary Secretary another supplementary question. I hope he does not mind. The Ceann Comhairle decides that.

Have I suggested that I do mind?

It is the Parliamentary Secretary's job to answer questions.

The Deputy should not become too irate.

I heard the Parliamentary Secretary before being a bit too smart with other Deputies.

I am waiting for the question.

I will very quickly put him in his place. What was the purpose of the original grant-in-aid? Was it to supplement the fees of Irish students?

It was a grant-in-aid across the board with particular regard to the fact that Irish students are catered for.

Since the fees are going up, would it not be justifiable to increase the grant?

Having regard to the total fees received and other factors, the amount of the grant would not be considerable.

Question No. 47.

This is a very important matter. Fees are being increased because of increased costs. In order to subsidise Irish students would the Parliamentary Secretary not think it advisable that a larger grant be given?

The whole matter is under discussion.
