Vol. 261 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Athlone Military Hospital.

57.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider reopening the hospital at Custume Barracks, Athlone, County Westmeath.

The answer is in the negative.

May I ask the Minister to reconsider his decision regarding the hospital in Custume Barracks, Athlone? The Minister is aware that a successful recruiting drive is being mounted, that members of the Defence Forces are on the increase, that Western Command now include extra stations by reason of Border duties and that there is now need for the hospital in Custume Barracks?

Certain facilities have been retained at Athlone and the command medical officer has been retained also. We consider that the existing arrangements are adequate for present requirements.
