Vol. 261 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Speed Limit.

99.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the concern at the delay in agreeing to a speed limit on the Low Road from Lucan to the Phoenix Park, Dublin; and if he is now in a position to announce his decision.

The question of a speed limit for this road was fully considered when the speed limits regulations for the Dublin area were reviewed in 1970, when it was decided that the imposition of a speed limit was not waranted. The matter will again be examined in the course of a review of the speed limits which is at present in hands.

Would the Minister agree that this road has a very high amenity value, that it is a scenic road and that it is desirable that cars should not be speeding on it? Would he consider that factor very carefully?

I agree with the Deputy that it is a very scenic road but it is not a built-up area. The speeds on the road are not that excessive. It is estimated that 85 per cent of the traffic that use the road travels at a speed of less than 40 miles an hour.
