Vol. 261 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Roads.

103.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will provide a special grant for the first-class primary roads leading to Knock Shrine from Claremorris and Charlestown, County Mayo, on which thousands of pilgrims travel each year and which are at present in a very dangerous condition.

The national primary improvement grant for County Mayo has been increased from £55,000 to £75,000 in the current year. It includes provision for a major improvement scheme at present in progress on the Charlestown section of the road referred to. Detailed proposals have not yet been developed for other sections of the road. Decisions with regard to improvements at Knock await the report of a planning study commissioned by Mayo County Council for the Knock area.

104.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will have the road from the Roscommon border through Ballyhaunis, Claremorris, Balla and Castlebar, County Mayo, designated as a first-class primary road.

The road referred to by the Deputy has already been designated as a national secondary road. I am satisfied that its inclusion in the national primary network would not be warranted.
