Vol. 262 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disabled Persons' Allowances.

7.

asked the Minister for Health the total number of people in receipt of disabled persons' maintenance allowances at the latest date for which figures are available.

At the 31st March, 1971, the latest date for which figures are available, the number of persons in receipt of allowances under the Disabled Persons (Maintenance Allowances) Regulations, was 23,565. The estimated number of recipients as at 31st March, 1972 was 24,300.

(Cavan): Can the Minister tell us when it is proposed to disregard means other than the means of the disabled person?

I have already dealt with that on a number of occasions in the House and said it was not possible to include that change in the provisions for Health in the current financial year.

(Cavan): The Minister had promised that he would disregard other means as and from 1st April of this year.

I never made any such promise.

(Cavan): That is what the Minister led the people to believe.

Would the Minister have information concerning the number in receipt of the maximum amount?

I have not got that figure. The Deputy will have to ask another question.

(Cavan): Can the Minister give us any idea of when he will disregard means other than the means of the disabled person?

That would be a matter for consideration by the Government in relation to the budget.
