Vol. 262 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Health Nurses.

9.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Health when he intends to amend the present regulation which excludes married women from holding permanent appointments as public health nurses.

The restriction in question is one of a number of conditions of service which are of common application throughout the public service.

Following the Government decision on this matter, announced in the budget statement of the Minister for Finance on 19th April last, I commenced inquiries from other branches of the public service affected in the same way as my Department. I intend to end this restriction for appointments as public health nurse and for other appointments under health boards as soon as I am satisfied, as the result of these inquiries, that to do so in advance of those other sectors, for some of which legislation for the change would be required, will not give rise to any serious anomalies.
