Vol. 262 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon and Pork Demands.

46.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the results of the studies announced in paragraph 5.69 of the Third Programme for Economic and Social Development into the production of and consumer demand for bacon and pork in forms other than Wiltshire sides; and the action taken by him to give them practical application.

These studies have been in train by An Foras Talúntais and the Pigs and Bacon Commission but I am not in a position to give details of action arising therefrom.

Has the report been received in the Department on this research?

No, but I know decisions have been taken by the commission and that they have been working on research and surveys and that they are being put into effect.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say which results, if any, have arisen from this research which was promised in the Third Programme?

As I have said, the decisions by the commission, based on the results of their activities, are being carried into effect and I am perfectly satisfied——

Which decisions? Name one.

Many decisions have been taken and are being implemented.

What are they?

Will Deputy Bruton cease cross-examining?

It is very hard to cross-examine the Parliamentary Secretary. He knows no answers.

Deputy Bruton apparently infers that because a detailed reply is not given there is nothing happening in relation to it. I assure the House that the activities of my Department are to be seen in the tremendous expansion that has taken place in recent years and anyone who tries to create the impression that the Department of Agriculture——

The Parliamentary Secretary does not know what is happening in his Department.
