Vol. 262 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Attendance Officers.

15.

asked the Minister for Education the number of school attendance officers employed in the urban areas; the basis of appointment of these officers; and the qualifications for such posts.

There are 39 school attendance officers employed in urban areas.

The appointments are made on the basis of the number of such officers necessary for the committee to enforce school attendance in their respective areas. The qualifications required are set out in the School Attendance Committees (Qualifications of Officers Order, 1956, S.I. No. 329 of 1956).

Has the Minister any intention of having a close look at the qualifications for such posts in view of the fact that they seem to be very general and that more specialised qualifications should be necessary for such appointments?

That is something that could be considered.
