Vol. 262 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Name of Meath Town.

62.

asked the Minister for Local Government why the Meath County Registrar has not been informed of the change in the name of the town from An Uaimh to Navan with effect from the 1st January, 1972.

On 25th June, 1971, the Government made an order under section 76 of the Local Government Act, 1946, entitled the Local Government (Change of name of Urban District) Order, 1971. The order changed the name of the urban district of An Uaimh to Navan and in accordance with the statutory provision, the order came into operation on 1st January, 1972.

The order, being a statutory instrument, was published in the manner prescribed by the Statutory Instruments Acts and is available on sale. Written notification of the making of the order was also sent to the persons prescribed for this purpose in the Local Government (Changing of Place Names) Regulations, 1956. In addition, a statement on the matter was issued by the Government Information Bureau and was widely reported in the news media. My Department did not send special notification to the county registrar but have confirmed that he is fully aware of the change of name.

Is the Minister aware that Government Departments continue to use "An Uaimh" and can he give any explanation as to why that extraordinary situation should obtain?

I think both forms have equal standing now.

The decision was to change to the use of the English form.

The question relates to the county registrar and not to Government Departments.
