Vol. 262 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Amenity Scheme Allocations.

92.

asked the Minister for Local Government the amount paid to each local authority from the £300,000 amenity scheme; and the basis on which this money was allocated.

No payments have yet been made to local authorities under the new amenity grants scheme but I would refer the Deputy to my written reply on the 27th June last in which I set out in a tabular statement the amount allocated to local authorities for the year 1972-73 under the scheme. In making these allocations several factors were taken into consideration. The maximum grant from my Department under the scheme is 50 per cent of the cost of any project. In a number of cases the amount allocated represents 50 per cent of the total cost of all eligible projects submitted by a local authority. In other cases the size of the authority, its past activity under the old scheme of amenity grants, the number of projects for which grants were allocated under the old scheme of amenity grants which still remain to be completed, the nature and extent of the scheme submitted and the special needs of certain areas such as, for example, the western seaboard counties and designated areas, were all taken into account in making these allocations.
