Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Footpath Areas.

144.

asked the Minister for Local Government how the width and area of footpaths in Dublin compares with that of other European cities; and whether, having regard to the present road demands and congestion, the question of gaining additional space from pathways with little inconvenience to pedestrians will be examined.

There is no information available to me that such a comparison has been made or would be of general use. Works aimed at gaining space from footpaths, without inconveniencing pedestrians, in order to improve road capacity and relieve road congestion have been carried out on certain streets in Dublin. I am sure that the possibility of undertaking further similar works will continue to receive consideration from the responsible road authorities. The Deputy will at the same time appreciate that there is a case to be made in the city centre, particularly, for giving pedestrians extra facilities, to the extent of creating pedestrian streets.
