Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pig Production.

69.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the arrangements made in pursuance of paragraph 5.62 of the Third Programme for Economic and Social Development to provide an improved advisory service for pig producers; and the number and location of specialist pig advisers in the advisory services.

The arrangements being pursued in this regard include attendance by instructors at seminars held in conjunction with An Foras Talúntais and at intensive in-service training for instructors whose districts are in the principal pig husbandry areas.

Also, two specialist advisers in pig husbandry attached to my Department maintain close contact with instructors through short courses in pig husbandry and individual visits.

Does the Minister consider that two specialist advisers in pig husbandry are sufficient in view of the importance of the industry?

This particular branch of farming is in the same category probably as many others in that the technical assistance available needs to be expanded.
