Vol. 263 No. 1

Written Answers. - Financial Support for Official Strikers.

451.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether employees on official strike are entitled to supplementary financial support in the event of their family undergoing extreme hardship; and, if so, where this financial support can be obtained.

There is no provision under which such support could be provided by my Department. However, it is, of course the statutory duty of the public assistance authorities to give to every person in their areas who is in need such public assistance as shall appear to them to be necessary or proper in each particular case. Application for such assistance may be made to the appropriate authority which administers home assistance in the area concerned. In most areas this would be the regional health board. However, in the case of counties Cavan, Clare, Donegal, Kerry, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Sligo, Tipperary and Wicklow applications should be made to the County Councils.
