Vol. 263 No. 1

Written Answers. - Delays in Registry of Deeds.

453.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that persons attending at the Registry of Deeds are often unable to register deeds on the day of first attendance because of inadequate arrangements to ensure registration of all deeds on presentation; and what steps will be taken to eliminate the delays to which the public are being subjected.

I have been informed by the Registrar of Deeds that only in exceptional circumstances, such as when there is a large lodgment of deeds late in the afternoon near to the statutory closing time for registration, that is, 4.30 p.m., are persons attending at the Registry of Deeds unable to have deeds which are in order registered on presentation. Such circumstances occur most infrequently. There are no arrears of deeds awaiting registration at present despite an estimated 25 per cent increase in the number of deeds being lodged during 1972 as compared with 1971.
