Vol. 263 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Subvention Structure.

24.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he anticipates any change in the financial supports for CIE following this country's accession to EEC.

In the light of the EEC regulations governing the payment of State aid to transport undertakings it will be necessary to change the existing subvention structure for CIE. Examination of this question is proceeding in consultation with CIE and the EEC Commission.

Could the Minister say at this stage in this reconsideration of the financial structure of CIE whether it will involve any employment changes in the existing CIE organisation?

I could not say; I do not think so. I do not think it has anything to do with employment changes.

Is the Minister saying that the numbers at present employed in CIE will be retained? Does the Minister visualise any extension of the policy of the road transport section handing over to private enterprise at this stage?

As far as I know the regulations provide only for a change in the subvention structure which is at present under consideration. One meeting has already taken place and there is another one in progress just now, I think.

Would the Minister let us know what the position is in regard to the McKinsey Report?

That is a separate question.

But it is very much involved with the other question.
