Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Community Schools.

49.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the criticisms by the Irish Medical Association of the design of the proposed community schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Discussions in relation to the planning of these schools took place between representatives of the Irish Medical Association and officers of my Department. I have seen a newspaper account of these discussions on which apparently the Deputy's question is based.

I do not feel called upon to make any statement on the matter beyond saying that that account is very much at variance with the official report of the discussions which was furnished to me.

Does the Minister accept that the design for the community schools should have been the subject matter of a public competition rather than being placed with a private firm, without any public advertising?

I have gone into this matter previously. This question refers to the criticisms of the Irish Medical Association.

It was a nice plum.
