Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers' Leave of Absence.

76.

asked the Minister for Education the terms under which (a) a primary teacher (b) a secondary teacher (c) a vocational teacher and (d) a university teacher is given leave of absence to pursue a career other than his teaching.

Normally leave of absence is not granted to school teachers to pursue a career other than teaching. Exceptions to this general rule are: A teacher who is a member of the Oireachtas may be granted special leave with pay on condition that he employs a substitute who is qualified to take his classes.

Secondment of a teacher for a limited period to other services to perform duties of an educational nature; in such a case the body availing of the services of the teacher repay the full cost of the secondment.

The circumstances in which and the conditions on which a university teacher may be granted leave of absence from his normal duties for any purpose are entirely a matter for decision by the appropriate university authorities, and I have no information regarding the basis on which such decisions may be taken in particular cases.
