Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Furniture Tenders.

107.

asked the Minister for Education how the Buy Irish campaign can be reconciled with recent widespread newspaper advertising for international tenders for school furniture, which may result in the hardpressed Irish furniture industry losing important orders to manufacturers in other countries.

The tenders in question relate to cases where part of the cost is being financed by a World Bank loan. It is one of the conditions governing such a loan that tenders must be sought internationally.

Is the Minister aware that this happens also in respect of certain materials for the Army? This is not necessary because there are two Irish firms producing the material.

That is not my responsibility.

It is Government practice.
