Vol. 263 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Market Price Reporting.

127.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the main differences between the system of price reporting on cattle markets in this country and that required by EEC regulations; if he will indicate the steps being taken to adjust this country's regulations; and the date from which the adjustments will have to be operative.

The change being made is that under EEC regulations we will be reporting weekly to the Community as from 1st February next the prices of certain categories of cattle at a number of markets accepted as representative for Ireland.

Could the Minister tell me if these reports will be made available to the public?

I do not see any reason why they should not. They will be based on five different centres: Maynooth, Bandon, Dublin, Ballymahon and Kilkenny.

Would the Minister state if he has given any thought to the channels through which he might make this information available to the public?

No, I have not, but I do not see that there is any military secret about it. As a matter of fact I think it is broadcast on the radio every week, after a fashion.
