Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - “On the Spot” Fines.

125.

asked the Minister for Justice if he intends to implement the recommendation of the report of the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure regarding the extension of "on the spot" fines; and, if so, when.

No decision has yet been taken on this matter.

Does the Minister not agree that, in view of the vast amount of time which Garda personnel spend in District Courts dealing with minor traffic offences, which time very often is paid for at overtime rates, it would be a considerable saving of money and of Garda time if the extension suggested by this committee could be implemented?

The Deputy will be aware that there is a strongly-worded reservation by one of the members with regard to a substantial part of the recommendations. Several other Departments are involved in the various recommendations and I wish to have the views of these before putting the matter to the Government for a decision.

Has the Minister considered these views?

I have received the views of some Departments to date but, as yet, I have not received others.
