Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Wandering Horses.

147.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will indicate any new measures which it is proposed to adopt to cater for the growing menace of wandering horses in Dublin north-west.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 48 of 14th March. On that occasion I indicated what was being done by the Garda in the matter and I explained that the problem in Dublin north-west was one for the Dublin Corporation

I understand from the Garda that the activity of the special unit which has been established by the Dublin Corporation has led to a decrease in the number of horses wandering on the unfenced corporation land in Finglas with a consequent drop in the volume of complaints received by the Garda.

Although the question is specific, this is a nation-wide hazard.

The Garda throughout the country bring a very large number of prosecutions in respect of these offences. Any amendment of the law on it would be a matter in the first instance for the Minister for Local Government.
