Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Tenant Purchase Legislation.

149.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will introduce legislation to allow tenants of privately owned houses to purchase them.

The answer is "no", at least as regards legislation of the kind that the Deputy apparently has in mind. Certain lessees and tenants have, of course, the right to purchase the fee simple of their properties under the 1967 Ground Rents Act. Legislation that is in preparation will propose the extension of this right to some further classes of tenants.

It would be out of the question to give the right to purchase the landlord's interest to persons who are simply occupational tenants.
