Vol. 263 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aer Lingus New York Flights.

21.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will indicate the latest position with regard to the proposed ban on Aer Lingus flights to New York; and when a definite resolution of this matter can be expected.

As the House is aware, negotiations on the landing rights issue have been taking place over the past year but no agreement has been reached. My colleague, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, recently had a personal meeting with President Nixon and informed him fully in the matter, particularly in the wider policy context. President Nixon has undertaken to give the matter his personal attention.

As I have indicated on previous occasions, the Government are determined to hold out for the best solution possible. I do not propose to make any further statement at present.

Can the Minister give an assurance to the House that there will be no breakdown?

What should break down?

Whatever secret talks the Minister is having. Can we be assured that flights to New York will be continued?

Such matters do not break down: they reach a conclusion.

Now that the American Presidential election is over, will Mr. Nixon have the same interest in the matter?

So long as he visits Timahoe, it will be all right.

Is the Minister saying to the House that we are now waiting for President Nixon to do something.

We are in constant communication.

I understand that the Minister for Foreign Affairs has had discussions with President Nixon and that we are now waiting for President Nixon to take action.

We are in constant communication on this matter.

I am calling Question No. 22.

This is a very important matter for the entire country. It is a matter that affects the employment of personnel. It is not only a question for the Minister.

The Minister is acting for the entire country.

He has an obligation also to keep the people informed.

If the Deputy wishes to learn how to be over here he should know that these matters are not published in advance of a final decision.
