Vol. 263 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Resort Safety Factors.

173.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is proposed to amend the laws governing the safety factors in places of public resort, with a view to ensuring a greater degree of safety for the patrons.

My chief concern in this matter is with fire safety. Under existing legislation local authorities have substantial powers enabling them to exercise controls in relation to fire danger in places of public resort.

As already announced I have set up a working party to advise me on certain aspects of the operation of the fire service, including staffing, resources, fire prevention and review of legislation.

As regards other aspects I have written to all local authority managers advising them of the need to investigate the adequacy of control and safety features in sports stadia. The use of places for public dancing is subject to licensing controls under the Public Dance Halls Act, 1935.
