asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of each year since 1960 (a) the total number of agricultural holdings, (b) the total number of farmers on the land and (c) the total number of workers on the land.

(a) Numbers of holdings are available only for those years in which complete agricultural enumerations were carried out, namely 1960, 1965 and 1970. These figures, which relate to holdings above one acre are as follows:—

(b) Total numbers of farmers are available only from the periodic Censuses of Population. The latest information, derived from the 1961 and 1966 Censuses, is as follows:—

Annual estimates are made of the total number of persons at work in agriculture, forestry and fishing. The figures for the years 1960 to 1971 are given below. The estimates for the years 1967 to 1971 are subject to revision when the results of the 1971 Census of Population become available.
