Vol. 264 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cancer Death Rate.

18.

asked the Minister for Health if he proposes to organise a publicity campaign for the prevention of cancer in view of the annual death rate of 5,000 from this disease.

A significant proportion of cancers cannot be prevented by a publicity campaign. The prevention of some specific form of cancer can however be influenced by publicity, for example, lung cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer.

Publicity is being undertaken towards the prevention of lung cancer by means of the anti-cigarette smoking campaign, including the warning on cigarette packets.

Cervical smear tests are available as part of the health services and are publicised as such.

The provision of lectures, film shows, leaflets, posters, directed towards the prevention of cancer is undertaken by the Irish Cancer Society and the Irish Heart Foundation.

I am keenly aware of the necessity for further health education and publicity which will lead to a healthier life, physically and psychologically, and I constantly review the progress and emphasis of my Department's campaigns.
