Vol. 264 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Calf Exports.

51.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to reports that the Associated Livestock Marts of Ireland are anxious to have EEC regulations changed so as to curb the export of live calves to Italy; and if he will state his policy on this matter in view of the fact that the curbs on the export of young cattle would militate against the interests of small producers, in particular, and result in a lower price for calves to the benefit of large farming interests.

I have seen a press report in this matter.

The export of calves to destinations other than the UK is at present prohibited except under licence. This prohibition cannot be maintained after enlargement of the EEC and I have no reason to think that, as in the case of exports to the UK, our trade in the various classes of animals will not find an appropriate level on the basis of new price relativities which will adequately safeguard our national interest in the matter.
