Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 5 Dec 1972

Vol. 264 No. 5

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business as follows: Nos. 17, 18 (Votes 34, 35 and 39).

I should like to ask the Minister whether he would inform the House when Government time will be allocated to the discussion of the Report of the Committee of Public Accounts on the use and misuse of moneys voted by the Dáil for the relief of distress in Northern Ireland.

There is no provision for a debate on that matter between now and Christmas.

Would the Minister not agree that that document has very disturbing implications not only for public finance but also for law and order about which this Government are showing such belated concern? Why will he not state the time when we can debate this very important question?

The Deputy will appreciate that the law and order matter was decided last week despite the Deputy's vote.

It has not been decided yet.

It still does not get the £100,000.

Does the Minister not agree that this matter should be cleared up once and for all in this House and should not be left over until next year, that it is very important that we should get to the bottom of this matter in this House, that it should be dealt with in open session of the House so that we can find exactly where the money went that was to help the people in the north?

The Deputy may not discuss the pros and cons.

Would the Minister agree that in all fairness this matter should be discussed without delay?

This is a red herring on the part of the Labour Party to confuse the situation arising out of their vote last week against public opinion.

The misuse of that money led to many deaths.
