Vol. 265 No. 2

Written Answers. - State Cars Statistics.

200.

asked the Minister for Justice the total mileage registered on State cars in respect of the Taoiseach and each Minister and Parliamentary Secretary for the calendar year 1972; and the total estimated cost of this facility including the provision of gardaí as drivers.

The mileage registered on the State cars allocated to the Taoiseach and each Minister and Parliamentary Secretary for the calendar year 1972 is as follows:

Mr. J. Lynch, 34,573; Mr. Childers, 38,944; Mr. Colley, 34,017; Dr. Hillery, 51,782; Mr. J. Brennan, 48,879; Mr. B. Lenihan, 49,435; Mr. J. Gibbons, 63,117; Mr. O'Malley, 41,000; Mr. Molloy, 46,889; Mr. Lalor, 47,201; Mr. Cronin, 49,661; Mr. S. Flanagan, 52,334; Mr. Faulkner, 43,744; Mr. G. Collins, 62,441; Mr. O'Kennedy, 49,659; Mr. Andrews, 41,327; Mr. Kitt, 46,775; Mr. Geoghegan, 43,644; Mr. Cunningham, 45,985; Mr. Lemass, 33,683; Mr. Fahey, 42,109; Mr. Tunney, 302.

For various reasons, precise costings of this service are difficult to make but, on the basis of costings made in 1971 and allowing for subsequent increases in pay, et cetera, the total cost in respect of the 22 persons referred to in the question, for the year 1972, was of the order of £72,000 in respect of the provision of the cars, £99,000 in respect of Garda pay, £45,000 in respect of Garda allowances, including overtime, plus an element of about £25,000 towards Garda pensions.
